Venice Lathes
Logan Lathe High-Gear: Push Wheel "A" and Knob "B" in.Changing to low-gear range
1. Stop the lathe
2. Pull out Lever "B"
3. Pull out Spindle-End "A". 
4. Jiggle Round Spindle-End "A" side-to-side to engage.
Direction of Lead-Screw (Moves Carriage In or Out)
Up - Towards Headstock/Center
Middle - Neutral
Down - Away from Headstock/Center
Direction of Feed
Up - Movement towards or away from spindle, parallel to Bed
Middle - Neutral (required for threading)
Down - Cross-slide moves in-or-out into or away from workpiece.
Feed on/off
Up - On
Down - Off
Threading
Left - Off
Right - On (Set "Direction of Feed" at Neutral)


South Bend Lathe The Gear-Lock Pin goes down for low Back-Gear.  Good for Knurling and Threading.Belt must match on Top & Bottom Pully.Changing to Back(low) Gear:
1) Loosen Belt
2) Move Gear-Lock Pin Down
3) Move Back-Gear Leaver Forward
4) Tighten Belts.
Direction of Lead-Screw (Top Right Picture)
Up - Towards Headstock/Center
Middle - Neutral
Down - Away from Headstock/Center
Feed-Direction
Up - Carriage moves to or away from spindle.
Middle - Neutral (position when threading)
Down - Outside/Inside Cross-Slide Movement
Feed on/off
Up - On (must be "fully" up)
Down - Off
Threading
Down - Off
Up - On (When Threading, make sure "Feed-Direction" is in Neutral)
RPM/Speed
Adjusted by loosening Belt Tensioning Leaver and moving belt to matching Top & Bottom pulley positions.

Lathe
 Put the Feed/Leadscrew in Neutral when not using the feed or threading.
Use the Cross-slide/Carriage toggle to start and stop feed.
Spindle On/Off & Brake
Up - On
Middle - Off
Down - Brake

Feed - Cross-Slide or Carriage
Right & Up - Cross-Slide On (In/Out)
Middle - Neutral
Down - Carriage Movement (Left/Right)
Feed/Leadscrew Direction
Up - Carriage Left OR Cross-Slide Out
Middle - Neutral (No Leadscrew Movement)
Down - Carriage Right OR Cross-Slide In
Threading
Up - Off
Down - On
(Put Feed/Thread Selection on Thread, and Feed - Cross-Slide or Carriage in Neutral)

Carriage/Cross-Slide Feed Movement
Pushed In - Carriage (Left or Right)
Middle - Neutral
Pulled Out - Cross-Slide (In/Out)

Pushed In - Carriage Right or Cross-Slide In.
Middle - Neutral
Pulled Out - Carriage Left or Cross-Slide Out
Feed on/off
Up - On
Down - Off
Threading
Up - Off
Down - On
(When Threading, make sure "Feed-Direction" is in Neutral)
Spindle Start-Stop
Up - Spindle-On
Down - Spindle-Off
RPM/Speed

When stopped, match Green, Red, Yellow or Blue colors at the top of the dial.  Feed-Speed/Thread-Pitch
Read the chart & find the Speed/Pitch you are looking for.  Then move the SEVEN knobs into the indicated settings.
The controls on the Clausing are a little complicated! 

LeBlond Lathe Pull Feed/Thread Select OUT for Feed.  Push Thread/Feed Select In for Threading.  Leave in Out Position for general use.
Carriage-Long/Cross-Slide Feed Movement
Left and Up - Starts Carriage-Long (Left/ Right) movement
Middle - Neutral
Right and Down - Starts Cross-Slide (In/Out) movement
Threading
Up - Off
Down - On
For Threading, put "Carriage/Cross-Slide Feed" in Neutral and "Feed or Thread Select" is pushed in.
Feed or Thread Select
Pull Out to Right for Feed
Push In to Left for Threading

Spindle Start-Stop
Up - Spindle-On
Down - Spindle-Off
Feed Direction
Change for direction of Carriage & Cross-Feed as labeled when Spindle Stopped.
RPM/Speed

Match the lines of the Two Knobs for Speed.  Change when Spindle Stopped.
When using Feed or Threading, check position of Feed/Thread Select and Feed Direction.
